Anyway to buffer?

When I connect to my box to stream a channel over 3G or wifi when not at home the picture plays for a few seconds then freezes for a few seconds, and this carries on.
I know it's streaming direct from the box, I just wondered if there was anyway that the box could hold onto the stream (buffer) for a few seconds before releasing the stream to my ipad / iPhone, hopefully making it watchable.
